John W. Powell joins Sunstein as a Patent Partner

Sunstein LLP is pleased to announce the addition of Boston attorney John W. Powell as a Partner in the firm’s Patent Practice Group. John brings extensive technology and business experience to the firm honed over his two decades as VP, General Counsel, and Secretary of American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC), a publicly traded global energy technologies company focused on the renewable energy and electric grid markets, previous positions focused on IP law at Raytheon and Motorola, and most recently as a Partner at the Boston law firm Verrill.

John’s is widely recognized for his strategic approach helping companies build international IP portfolios that add value, and he is considered integral to his clients’ management and engineering teams.

At Sunstein he will focus on helping technology and business clients create and protect their intellectual property portfolios, keeping their long and short-term goals at the forefront while providing expert legal services in areas such as:

  • Patent drafting and prosecution
  • IP counseling
  • Patent Strategy
  • Opinions
  • Due Diligence
  • Negotiating and drafting IP licensing agreements and development agreements, both commercial and government, including SBIR contracts and CRADAs

John received his JD from the University of New Hampshire School of Law and is a member of the Massachusetts Bar.
