Law360 Highlights Sunstein’s Federal Circuit Ingenico Triumph in Midyear Report

Report details the biggest patent rulings of 2025 to date

Sunstein LLP is pleased to announce that Law360 ranked the firm’s Federal Circuit victory in Ingenico Inc. v. IOENGINE LLC as one of the top five patent decisions from the first half of 2025.

The decision, announced in May, upheld a sweeping patent infringement defense jury verdict win for Sunstein client Ingenico Inc., a global provider of point-of-sale payment technologies and services. The Federal Circuit affirmed the trial court’s 2022 ruling that patent claims asserted against Ingenico in district court are invalid in view of a prior art device known as the DiskOnKey.

In addition to being a complete vindication for Sunstein’s client, the decision resolves a split among district courts regarding the scope of inter partes review (IPR) estoppel and provides noteworthy implications for patent litigants and future validity challenges.

Sunstein Managing Partner Kerry L. Timbers and attorney Kevin R. Mosier represented Ingenico in the litigation.
